The Importance of Building a Strong School Community for Twice-Exceptional Students

At Lang, we know that fostering an empowering and supportive community within our school is particularly crucial for the success of our Twice-Exceptional (2e) students. These students, who are both gifted and have learning disabilities or differences, often face unique challenges that require a nurturing and inclusive environment. Building a community that fosters emotional safety, encourages risk-taking, and supports collaborative learning can make all the difference in their educational journey.

Emotional safety is at the center of our thriving school community. For 2e students, who may struggle with anxiety, self-esteem issues, perfectionism, or fear of failure, feeling safe emotionally is key to their success. In a community where they are understood and supported, these students are more willing to try new things, explore different learning methods, and even make mistakes—all of which are essential for growth and development.

When students feel emotionally safe, they are not afraid to ask questions and express their ideas. This sense of security allows 2e students to embrace their strengths while working on their areas for continued growth. It also reduces the pressure to conform to traditional learning paths, giving them the freedom to learn in ways that align with their unique abilities.

In our community, mistakes are not seen as failures, but as opportunities for learning. Many 2e students identify as “perfectionists” and can exhibit self-critical behaviors, but when a community supports and celebrates effort and the “process of learning”, rather than just the outcome, such as the grade on an assessment, students are more likely to take risks and explore innovative thinking. This orientation is central to learning and living at Lang.

For 2e students, risk-taking might involve stepping out of their comfort zone to participate in group projects and presenting their ideas in front of peers or experts in a given field. In a supportive community, these experiences can boost their confidence and help them develop resilience which is essential for navigating both academic challenges and life beyond the classroom.

At Lang, teachers, peers, and parents work together to create an inclusive and collaborative environment where 2e students can thrive. Building a strong, emotionally safe, and supportive community in schools is vital for the success of Twice-Exceptional students. Communities like ours not only fosters students’ academic growth, but also nurtures their emotional well-being, encouraging them to take risks, embrace challenges, and realize their full potential. By working together, educators, parents, and peers at Lang create an environment where every 2e student can feel valued, understood, and empowered to succeed.
